Full STEAM Ahead!

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!

ARTS & CULTURE STEAM DAY

Students worked in small groups experimenting on how different objects make vibrations.

Students created instruments with recycled materials and played their own music.

Students identified the different shapes that were used to create their own instruments.

Students put on a “music show” using their instruments.

Robotics event: VEX Go MAYze Madness Competition

Our second graders participated in the VEX Robotics Competition! The VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, is the largest robotics program globally. Each year, an exciting engineering challenge is presented in the form of a game. Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, build innovative robots and compete year-round.

Our second graders also built houses or structures that could withstand the force of wind.

STEAM DAY & GARDEN ACTIVITY

Students showed:

How to identify parts and purposes of different plants and seeds.
Record of accurate measurements of the germinated seed that they had in their classrooms.
Flyers that they created with Microsoft word with unique design.

WINTER STEAM DAY: SLEIGH & SLOPE

Students showed how they created a sleigh and a slope. They explained their blueprint and design and how can be done to reduce friction making the sleigh travel further.

STEAM EXHIBITION DAY

Through trial and error students demonstrated their knowledge of writing code to create movement and lights for Dot, Dash and Cue Robots.

Students analyzed mathematical relationships to draw conclusions, assisting in the creation of suspension bridges.

Students presented sway projects showcasing their art creations.

STEAM and Music

The “A” in STEAM is a term that represents liberal arts, language arts, social studies, physical arts, fine arts, and MUSIC. STEAM education is about applying creative thinking to STEM projects, igniting students’ imagination and creativity through music and the arts.

STEM might be necessary for technological progress, but without the arts it is impossible for students to reach their full potential. Because art subjects give students the freedom to harness the capabilities of STEM subjects.
